Gitarist en singer-songwriter Alastair Greene maakt al vanaf 1997 deel uit van een blues rock trio met uitvalbasis in Zuid Californië. Greene werkte in de voorbije jaren samen met zanger Mickey Thomas, de frontman van (Jefferson) Starship en was daarnaast, van 2010 tot 2017, ook de gitarist van Alan Parsons. De nu 71-jarige Britse musicus, producer (Pink Floyd) en componist Alan Parsons werkte bij de beroemde Abbey Road Studios en richtte in de jaren ‘70 samen met Eric Woolfson, The Alan Parsons Project op. Greene is sinds 1997 de frontman van de Alastair Greene Band en nam in de voorbije 20 jaar solo al acht albums (incl. twee live en een compilatie album) op. In 2019 tekende Greene bij het Whiskey Bayou Records label van de gerenommeerde multi-instrumentalist en producer/songwriter Tab Benoit.

Zijn nieuwe studio album ‘The New World Blues’ is de opvolger van ‘Dream Train’ (2017), een album dat hij opnam met producer David Z, die ook al samenwerkte met Buddy Guy, Gov’t Mule, Kenny Wayne Shepherd en Jonny Lang. De nummers die hij voor ‘The New World Blues’ opnam -de meeste schreef hij aanvang 2019- zijn alle orgineel en enkele schreef hij samen met co-producer van het album, Tab Benoit. “The album is a refelection of current times and has equal parts light and dark, always woven with a tread of hope…” aldus Greene. De ritmesectie die Greene begeleidde bestond uit bassist Corey Duplechin en Tab Benoit zelf, zat achter de drums.

Alastair Greene’s album opent met “Living Today”. Het is de promo single die ze al eerder uitbrachten. Het zompige nummer valt op door het pulserende riff dat aanstekelige werkt, zonder dat het de relaxte cadans waarop het nummer drijft, teniet te willen doen. Met “Lies and Fear” verkent Greene een van de andere sub genres van de rock, de funk, terwijl na het rustige, soms lyrische “Bayou Mile” hij zich op “When You Don’t Know What to Do” gaat richting rockabilly. Ook het dromerige “No Longer Amused” is een soort overgangsnummer naar “Back at the Poorhouse”. In deze uptempo blues rocker knipoogt Greene even naar Freddie King. “Find Your Way Back Home” drijft daarna op een aangename groove, het rustige “Heroes” moet het hebben van de vocale harmonieën en “Alone and Confused” blijft beklijven door het aanstekelig slepend repetitief riff. Wat ongewoon, maar Greene sluit af met de titelsong, “The New World Blues”. Het is het meest slidy en hard rockende nummer op het album en dooft uit met veel ruis op het einde.

Alastair Greene is op ‘The New World Blues’ de blues rocker die met producer Tab Benoit stevige nummers schreef. Of ze de lucht helpen klaren in deze donkere dagen durven velen hopen. Ons wakker schudden doen ze zeker!
